Nordic/Cross Country Skiing

Cross Country Skiing is a winter sport for which skiers propel themselves along a snow covered surface using skis and poles. Cross Country skiing is part of the Nordic skiing sport family or Langluafing , which includes ski jumping, Nordic combined (cross country skiing and ski jumping), and ski-orienteering (which includes map navigation along snow trails and tracks). Cross Country Skiing is popular in many places with large snowfields most commonly the following countries:

  • Austria
  • Alaska
  • California
  • Canada
  • USA
  • Norway
  • Sweden
  • Switzerland

As a recreational sport, it can either be done as a means of travelling over extended periods of time, using huts and shelters similar to snow hikers to stay out, or as an alternative to alpine skiing on specific cross country trails, using maintained tracks.

There are two main styles of Cross Country Skiing: classic and skating. Classic involves skiing in prepared trails with grooves cut into the snow for the skis and the skiers use a stride style of gliding. Skate skiing involves employing a similar movement to that used in ice skating and roller blading.

Common Injuries

Cross Country is a low endurance sport, which means that the risk of injury is lower than in alpine skiing and other winter sports. However, as a high endurance sport, which uses every muscle group, it is possible to sustain a number of injuries from Cross Country skiing.

Some of these include:
