Getting A New Laptop/PC for College/University?

When I went to university we relied on good old fashioned note-taking by hand or if you were posh you had a dictaphone to record some of your notes.  This was in days before laptops, tablets etc. you lucky so and so's.

Thankfully, today, with the improvements in technology and, most importantly, the cost of computers being more affordable, it is possible for most people to own one.

When you looking for a Computer for your studies you should think about the following:

  • Is it portable as you will need/want to take it with you into University for lecturers and around to classmates houses or coffee shops to work on assignments — laptops and tablets, are great for doing this.
  • Make sure it is light — no good having a laptop if it weighs a ton as you won't want to take it with you as it's too heavy, so defeating the point.
  • If your looking to save money a desktop might be the best option for you as these are often cheaper.
  • Also, a good money-saving tip is to check what you are going to use your computer for, if it's just for writing essays or doing spreadsheets do you really need to spend your money on a high-end laptop?  Most people spend hundreds of pounds extra on software and processors that they don't really need. If you're studying something that requires the use of animation, video or photo editing, then you would be better off looking for a PC/Laptop that has lots of memory, larger processor and more storage.
  • You should also consider the power of the computer if you're a heavy user then you should look for a processor of Intel i7 and AMD Ryxen 7 and 8GB of RAM. If you just use it for web browsing and essay writing then look at PCs and Laptops with at least Intel i3 processor and 4 RAM.
  • Don't forget that Microsoft offers students a free copy of Microsoft Office 365 which gives you access to Word, Powerpoint and Excel for the duration of your studies, which can work across any device, phone, laptop etc.
  • Finally, after purchasing your PC don't forget to insure the item. Cover4Insurance can offer you cover just for your PC, Laptop or Tablet just click here.
