Need help with student contents insurance?

We know that students are busy, that’s why we’ve compiled a list of FAQs to help you quickly find what you need. Here you can find out more about who needs student contents insurance and what it covers while you’re living in university / private halls or a student house.

Do I need student contents insurance?

If you’re a student at university, you’ll probably have all sorts of belongings (laptops, tablets, tv, games consoles, pedal cycles, headphone etc) to help make your student halls/house feel more like home. If you think about having to replace your favourite items / gadgets and the effect it will have on your bank account doesn’t sound like a good idea you may want to take out insurance to make sure that if anything does happen – you’re covered.

Why else should I take out student home contents insurance?

Students can sometimes be seen as “easy targets” by thieves and usually have lots of valuable items. Having student insurance in place will help make sure you’re not left out of pocket should anything unexpected happen to the things you couldn’t live without.

Cover4Students automatically insures over 100,000 students via their university or accommodation provider, so you may already have a level of cover included with your accommodation. Check and download your cover here .

What’s covered with student contents insurance?

Being a student, this may be the first time you’ve had to think about insurance.

So, we’ll try and explain it in layman’s terms for you.

Usually, student contents insurance covers your personal possessions (things you own) within your student accommodation against the risks of fire, theft and flood. Items could include clothes, furniture, jewellery, and electrical items.

You will usually need to add extra cover for items that are seen as portable such as your mobile phone and laptop as these items are seen as a higher risk of theft or damage. The extended cover will then normally cover them anywhere in the UK as you are likely to be taking them to and from university.

If you’re staying in student accommodation, you may already have cover for your belongings through your accommodation provider. You can Check and download your cover here .

If you don’t have cover via your accommodation provider, or perhaps you’re living at home, or in a student house, you can still protect your items with Cover4Insurance via their Student Essentials product.

What’s not covered?

If you have student contents insurance via your accommodation provider, you can Click Here to find out the details of your policy.

If you’re thinking of insuring your gadgets with Cover4Insurance Mobile Phone & Gadget Insurance policy, as with most insurance policies, there are a few things that aren’t covered. These include:

  • Your excess
  • Gadgets over the maximum age when you buy the policy*
  • Cosmetic damage which does not affect operation
  • Gadget loss (unless selected)
iPhone

*Your gadgets need to be under 36 months old.

Are mobile phones covered by student contents insurance?

As standard, gadgets and mobiles aren’t included on most student contents insurance policies. But you can normally either add extra cover for these items or take out separate gadget insurance policy to cover these items.

It’s important to note that policy covers may be different for your gadgets than your student contents (for example, covering for accidental damage, rather than fire), so take a few minutes to check your full policy wording to make sure you understand the protection you have in place.

Questions to ask yourself when you’re getting student insurance

Heading to university can be quiet daunting, this may be your first time taking out an insurance policy. It is therefore important to take your time and make sure you fully understand the details of the policy before you buy.

It is a good idea to think about the following before purchasing your student contents insurance policy:

1. Am I already covered elsewhere?

Take the time to find out if you already have cover in place for your personal belongings – after all, you don’t want to be paying for cover you don’t need! There are 2 main things to check:

  • Find out whether you’re covered under your parents’ home insurance
  • Check if you already have contents insurance via your university or accommodation provider. You can then decide if this cover is enough for your individual circumstances, or whether you need to top it up.

NB: Policies provided by your accommodation provider normally only cover items within your room/flat.

2. What do I need to protect? Is the level of cover, right?

It can be difficult to assess the total amount of student contents cover you’re going to need at university, and it’s very easy to underestimate the value of your belongings – particularly your clothes and personal items. Here are some things to think about:

  • Add up the cost of your stuff - Spend some time calculating the full value of your possessions before you get a quote. This is so you can make sure you’re not under-insured if you need to make a claim.
  • Consider additional items - Consider whether you need cover for your tablet, laptop or mobile phone you might be taking to university. Remember that these may not be included as part of a standard contents insurance policy.
  • Find out where you’re covered for your items – If you need cover for outside of the accommodation you may need to purchase extra cover or a separate standalone policy for that item(s).
  • Get to know your policy - Finally, read the full details (T&Cs) of the policy to understand the cover you’re getting.

3. Are there any student discounts available?

You can check the company Social Media pages such as Facebook , Twitter & Instagram to see the latest offers or check if they have an offers page on there website or sign up to their mailing list to be kept informed of any discounts.

Am I already covered under my parent’s home insurance?

Once you move away from home, you may find that your belongings are no longer covered under your parents home insurance policy – and even if they are, it may be a limited level of cover. For example, your belongings may only be protected inside your room in a University Halls of Residence, not whilst you’re living in private rented house or out and about with friends / at lectures. It’s a good idea to check with your parent’s home insurance provider to see what the situation is.

Do I have student halls insurance without knowing?

Before taking out your own policy, you should also check whether your university / accommodation provider has arranged any insurance for you whilst you’re staying with them. If they have, this cover is sometimes provided by Cover4Students you check if you are automatically covered by Cover4Studnets by clicking here in just a few seconds or you can ask your accommodation provider directly.

I have student insurance with my halls of residence, is this enough?

If you do already have cover in place, it’s still important to check what is/isn’t covered. You will probably find that it won’t cover you while you our out and about – attending lectures visiting friends, doing the shopping etc you may therefore wish to purchase additional protection for items you take outside your home on a regular basis such as your mobile phone and laptop.
