Student Contents Insurance — Ireland

two women chatting outside

If you're heading off to college/university in Ireland this September/October then you may have some questions about insurance and if you need it.

Is student tenant's contents insurance compulsory in Ireland?

No, but some landlords may insist that, as part of your tenancy agreement, you have to have a level of cover in place to protect their property. In these cases where you don't have insurance then you would be in breach of your tenancy agreement.

All our student home contents insurance policies in Ireland offer protection for the landlord’s property against fire or theft damage up to €5,000. The cover is listed under the section titled “Landlords Property | Tenants Liability”

Prices start at €37 for students living in halls of residence. Click here for a quote

What is student/tenant's home contents insurance?

As a student away from home, you need insurance to help protect you against the trials of life, such as accidents or malicious intent, could you afford to replace all of your valuables: laptop, jewellery, phone etc., if they were stolen or completely destroyed in an accident, such as a fire? Insurance can't prevent these things from happening but is there to help you get your life back to normal, as quickly as possible. To protect your possessions and yourself please click here .

Does my parents' home insurance already cover me?

Parents and students tend to assume that the students' possessions will be covered by the parents' home insurance policy. But this isn't generally the case and even where there is an element of cover, there will be limitations so you will need to ask your insurer questions such as:

  • Will you (the student) be covered in a shared house?
  • Are there any lock requirements? if so you need to check if your property has the locks and if not, will your landlord allow you to put the sufficient lock on your door(s) or do that for you?
  • Are your contents covered in communal areas or just your room?
  • Will you be covered to take items out of the property - e.g. to and from university?
  • If more than one child at University can you all be covered on the one policy at the same time?
  • What are the limits/exclusions on the policy - e.g. are you covered for accidental damage or just theft?
